Westland London is one of the world's premier sources of antique fireplace mantels and chimneypieces. Housed in a former church in the center of London, its constantly changing inventory -- which is continually being replaced by ever more interesting and attractive period pieces -- includes fascinating examples of all styles and eras!

chimneypiece with overmantel, ca. 1880
Its ever evolving collection is comprised of antique mantels and overman-
tels made from a variety of materials
including stone, such as shown in the remarkable example pictured below. The stone Gothic Revival arched
chim-
neypiece has high
relief carved detail in the manner of A.W.N.Pugin (1812-
1852) and comes with the original
handsome brass clock -- in working or-
der -- in the overarch!
Not to be outdone by the stone surround pictured above, the very large and dramatically carved 19th century
chimneypiece that follows is made of oak in the 17th century Venetian Renaissance manner. This stunning mas-
sive
structure -- which came from the 16th century Irish home of Sir Wal-
ter Raleigh -- includes a base and surround
of beautiful white-veined Rouge de Rance red marble.
Following is a sampling of the range of styles and periods in wood mantels available from Westland London. Below, left, is a richly decorated late 19th century or Victorian-era surround made of rosewood -- a beautiful tropical hardwood profusely inlaid with a variety of other exotic woods with neo- classical panels and motifs.
Pictured below, right, is a somewhat simpler -- albeit equally beautiful -- 1930s English Art Deco chimneypiece. It is inlaid with a variety of woods including walnut, rosewood, satinwood, yew, elm and yellow pine.
In lieu of beautifully contrasting inlays of exotic woods, the following exam-
ples are ornamented with
elaborate carvings. Below, left, is a profusely carved walnut chimneypiece in the Renaissance manner.
Primarily carved with floral detail, this impressive mid-19th century European mantel is in-
terspersed with
carvings of angels, dragons and birds.
Pictured below, right, is a richly carved Neo Renaissance Walnut chimney-
piece from the late 19th century.
Italian in origin, it is styled in the manner of Salvatore Valenti, an Italian sculptor active in Palermo,
Sicily from 1835 to 1903.
Following is an unusual and evocative 1880 Arts and Crafts carved oak an-
tique fireplace mantle in the High
Gothic Romantic style. The frieze is carved with birds and foliate scrolls centered with a shield inscribed
with an ancient Welsh motto which translates to "Truth against the World."
Following is a sampling of the range of styles and periods in stone mantels available from Westland London. Below, left, is a very large Tudor Gothic Revival chimneypiece in limestone from the late 19th century.
Below, right, is an exceptional Italian Neo Classical chimneypiece grandly carved in white statuary marble. This richly adorned mantel dates from 1860.
Pictured below, left, is a nicely carved Louis XVI stone chimneypiece. Dat-
ing from the late 18th century,
this mantel is French in origin.
Below, right, is a large and imposing carved stone chimneypiece in the Renaissance manner. Italian in origin, it dates from the mid 19th century.
Pictured below, left, is a late 19th century English chimneypiece. Richly carved from limestone, it is in the Arts & Crafts Neo Gothic manner.
The large Neo Gothic stone chimneypiece pictured below, right, dates from 1880 and is in the manner of A.W.N. Pugin (1812-1852). Inset into the frieze are Minton glazed tiles -- also likely designed by Pugin.
Departing, dramatically, from the look of the stone chimneypieces pictured above, the following example is made from beautifully veined and colored marble with gilded accents. Richly ornamented, it is French Rococo Revival in style.
Whether you are looking for a chimneypiece made of wood, such as the large carved walnut hooded surround, circa 1860, in the Medieval Style (below left) . . . . . or stone, such as the Neo Gothic Arts & Crafts hooded surround in Bathstone (below right) . . . . . you'll have a myriad of options available to you at Westland London. With such a large selection, you are bound to find just the right antique mantel or surround for that special space in your home!
