A contemporary electric fireplace is a stylish and convenient alternative to the more conventional gas and wood burning fireplaces . . . . .

A great way to update the look and feel of any room, the installation of an electric fireplace provides a quick and cost-effective means of giving your home's interior a face-lift without spending a small fortune or dealing with the construction mess and delays typically associated with a home remodeling project.

Easy  to  install, it can generally be
up and running within minutes.   All that's  needed  is  a  standard  120
volt electrical outlet to plug into, a quick  turn  of  the  dial to the "On" position, and WAL-LAH!
. . . . . . . . instant heat and "flames!"
This  is  possible because most  models  are   completely  self-contained and  available  either  as  wall-hung  units  that  can  simply  be hung on the  wall  like a picture frame, such as the striking contemporary example at  right,  or  portable freestanding designs such as the example pictured  below  left.    Even those models  designed  to  be partially recessed into the wall,  such  as that pictured in the example below right, can generally be  installed  in  a  relatively short period of time,  as they don't require a chimney or any other form of venting to the outside.

Following  are  more  examples of portable freestanding designs.     Though all  are
contemporary
in  style,  each  is distinctive and uniquely different from the others.  For example, the design pictured below
left (top row) has a raised hearth with a lighted recess, while the example at  right  rests  on the floor and has
a European style,  vertically oriented firebox  opening.  In the  bottom  row  at  left,  the  soft amber glow in
the sculpted recess be-
hind  the  firebox  frame is achieved with cleverly concealed lighting.     My personal
favorite,  pictured at bottom right,  extends  the  graceful  curve of  the  elegant fire grate to both legs of the
mantelpiece.
The  two  wall-hung  units pictured below have face plates or firebox sur-
rounds that project from the wall to
conceal the source of the illumination from behind.
While the following wall mounted models don't rely on concealed lighting from behind for dramatic effect,  their uniquely distinctive forms make a powerful design statement!
And finally,  though the built-in ex-
amples pictured at right and below
lack  the portability of most of the
electric   designs  pictured  above,
their  more  permanent or "fixed in place"  positioning lends more real-
ism,
similar to gas and wood burn-
ing designs.     In addition to sleek stainless  steel surrounds to frame
the  "fire,"  as  shown  below,  the
striking  design pictured at bottom features a beautiful natural marble surround.
