Craftsman fireplaces are standard fixtures in many middle-class homes built in America during the first quarter of the last century . . . . . . .

A  quality  constructed  and  richly fin-

The following Craftsman hearth designs show the simple and clean lines that typify the style.    Once again,  a richly stained and finished wood mantel frames a tiled surround -- most of which are in the Arts and Crafts Style.

Conversely,  the following designs do not use a stain and,  with the excep-
tion  of the example pictured below,  right,  are not faced with tile.    The mantel pictured below,  left,  is finished naturally, while the two remaining examples have a painted finish.

The two Craftsman mantels pictured below frame  natural slate stone tiles. The  brilliantly  hued  slate  tile surround in the example at right provides a striking backdrop for the Craftsman Style facing on the gas fireplace insert.
