The corner fireplace design ideas featured here are -- quite literally -- "solid as a rock." Crafted from a wide array of stone types, colors, textures and finishes, the designs range from traditional to contemporary in style.

The positioning of the corner hearths varies, as well. For example, the tra-
ditional design pictured below,
left, is placed at a forty-five degree angle across the corner of the room. On
the other hand, the contemporary
design pictured below, right, is per-
pendicular to the outside wall.
Similarly, the river stone corner fireplace design pictured below, left, is placed at a forty-five degree angle and features a single plane or "straight across" facade. Conversely, the fieldstone design on the right features multiple planes, including the recessed area above the log mantel shelf.

The Great Room fireplace that follows is, once again, positioned at a forty-
five degree angle across the
corner. However, rather than a "flat front" that simply dives into the wall on either side, or is canted
backward at a right angle on either side, the stone work cants backward and outward at another forty-five
degree angle on either side of the wood mantel shelf -- giving it more of a hand-tailored look. This technique
also provides an ex-
cellent solution when there is a limited amount of space within which to work. In this
particular example, the space is restricted due to the close proximity of the windows flanking the fireplace.

If you're aiming for a more formal look, the corner fireplace design ideas at right and below may work better
for you. Pictured at right is a highly pol-
ished cast stone surround set against a backdrop of richly finished
wood paneling. Below, a highly formal, smoothly finished stone mantel and "overmantel" is placed against a
wide arc of randomly cut and assembled stones with a textured finish. The
end result? A striking juxtaposition
of both formal and casual architectural elements, giving the room a some-
what laid-back look -- but with an
understated formality and elegance.
The versatility in configuration and placement makes a corner fireplace de-
sign ideal for rooms where space is
often at a premium. Each of the kitch-
en designs pictured below effectively incorporates a corner fireplace
within the contraints of its available space.
Similarly, the upper floor bedrooms pictured at right and below feature
a neatly tucked-in fireplace just
be-
neath the roofline where the dor-
mer begins to project from the roof.
And finally, the Great Room pictured below features a striking corner fire-
place design placed at a forty-five
degree angle across the corner. And, once again, the fireplace is effectively positioned within the available
space by canting the sides backward and outward.
